Blankets for Caravans!

After our successful fundraiser in aid of Refugee Community Kitchen we decided that we wanted to do more!

So myself and my favourite co conspirator - Debbie Bliss - decided to work with a fantastic local group who donate caravans, kit them out and send them over to the French camps to house the most vulnerable.

Side by Side and Walthamstow Refugees Welcome Group are a completely self funded, grass roots community group made up of Walthamstow residents who've been moved to raise funds to purchase caravans to refurbish, kit out and send over to Calais.
The Wilcumstowe Wagons are such a great idea as dry, purpose built shelters are not easy to come by in the camps!

Plus the response to the actual making process (knitting) at our Crafternoon was something people said had helped them by forcing them to concentrate, have a quiet contemplative moment and reflect on the actual situation we as humanity are currently facing.
So what's better than working together to build something of massive importance? It's not just about making blankets but also about bringing people together and actually doing something!

And you know us and how we feel about quiet, slow contemplation and crafting so this prompted us to start up our knit nights again.
It's a little bit looser as there isn't a set date but for the moment we are meeting up weekly because we're on a deadline.
But as the camps aren't going anywhere soon this is something which we will keep doing until a) they are no longer needed or b) the camps are no longer in existence!

But for now...
We're trying to get at least 3 blankets ready for the caravans as we wanted to add a homely touch to them!
People have lost so much so we're hoping it will provide not just warmth, comfort but also possibly serve as a future heirloom to mark a change in people's lives.

To be kept in the loop please follow us on twitter or Instagram. Dates will be posted as soon as we know our head knitters availability but we'll try to give you at least 4 days notice!
The venue is the Queens Arms on Orford Road, Walthamstow Village E17 9NJ, London.

Please join us if you can!
Crocheters welcome and so are novice knitters so don't be shy... come along and lend us a hand!

Knit an Ice Cream for Bag Books!

We all love knitting, charity projects and ice cream so this is the perfect project which encompasses all of the above and more as it's also a quick make!
We're asking people to make these beauties for multi sensory stories for use by a charity called Bag Books. To find out more about them please visit their website: www.bagbooks.org

I absolutely love using craft in a therapeutic way and how it can provide comfort, joy and happiness not only to the recepients but also to the people making them.
I really hope this is something you might enjoy making and heck... I'm even going to sit down and try to conquer my fear of knitting patterns...though I may have to ask someone to wipe my brow hold my hand while I learn to decipher the code!

Plus as it's not real ice cream that means ZERO calories so no worrying about the hips but it will in fact provide a warm fussy feeling and that goes straight to the heart!

Alas, now the weather is warming up, the need for cosy knits is fading faster than you can say "where's the suntan lotion?"
Here's something you can make at any time of year to protect your precious phone from bumps and scratches (but not from being dropped down the toilet), using a devilishly simple way of knitting in the round on ordinary needles.

Read on for our fully-illustrated instructions, or click here to download the no-nonsense 1 sheet pdf version.

Pattern by No Idle Han. Many thanks to Penny Vickers for her astute pattern testing and Sayed Hasan for his photographic expertise.

Knit some Christmas cheer...

The good people of the Waltham Forest Adopt team have come up with a very crafty bit of campaigning... "Close Knit Family" is part of the very clever campaign to bring awareness to adoption.
So if you can knit and fancy doing your bit then get making! We love this project and we'll be clacking our needles to make a few too... though I think we definitely need a pet dog and a cat to finish off the family!

"As part of  the campaign we are asking people to get involved and raise awareness of the importance of adoption by knitting dolls that we will distribute to local children."

To make the dolls please follow the guide pattern:

Please have your dolls ready by Friday December the 13th and hand in or post to:

Friday's Craft Crush...

OK so it's more then just a Friday thing... this craft crush goes way beyond and I for one will be embracing it for the whole of the season for this craft is not just a one day thing!
Oh no...with the colder weather heading our way embracing all things woolly is something we really rather enjoy!
Now that the nights are drawing in, and lets face it the telly is pretty bleak, here's your chance to get knitting your very own home accessories and personal wears... and  it's not all about knitted bed socks, chunky throws, men in beards wearing Aran Jumpers -though we quite enjoy these too!- it goes beyond that.
And if you can't knit... don't worry, submit to the knit by either signing up to a stitch & bitch night, visiting your local yarn shop or getting your nanna to show you how but failing that check out You Tube for online tutorials!

Below are a few of our top picks of things you might want to make.
Oh yeah and to look at too... the man in the beard well... he's a gift. Take it. Enjoy!

Friday's Craft Crush

OK I'm going to have to be absolutely honest with you and come clean... I'm not a great knitter! There, it's out. I can just about do a stocking stitch and knitting patterns make me break out in a cold sweat but I really do want to learn! My mum's a nifty knitter so she usually provides all my woolly needs... hum, I wonder if that's the problem, if she wasn't so darn good would that have prompted me to pick up my own needles and learn?!
What I need is inspiration and one book I've had the pleasure to view has done just that:
"The knitted home" by Ruth Cross

She's my new girl crush and has managed to make me want to pick up those knitting needles and get clacking! Sumptuous photos of beautifully hand knitted home accessories and not a tea cosy in sight...

What Ruth has managed to do is compose a book which looks attractive and makes projects look achievable! Believe me for once I haven't closed a knitting book after reading the first set of instructions... I actually think I may tackle and succeed in making quite a few projects from this book and they are far from basic.
I really love the way she uses textures to add layers of interest to the home and this book has all that and more... I really can't wait to get started!
Now where did I put those knitting needles...
