It's been a while and so I thought I'd give you a quick update...
Craft Guerrilla is still going although nowhere as active as in the past!
If you'd still like to open your own army in any part of the UK (or the world)
get in touch... we'd love to get things moving again!
This past year has been hard on everyone and as we mainly work offering public
and group events we've had to completely stop. In a way it's been positive as it's
made us take stock and reevalute what we actually wanted to do.
Letting go of certain events and rethinking how we do others is something which
has been at the forefront of our minds for a while anyway!
It's been tough but I think it's also been cathartic!
As we move into returning to "normality" we hope that we can do things differently,
like going back to our roots of working with recycled materials, coolaborating
with people we admire and who share our ethics as well as concetrating more
on those ethics and finding ways to make them work along with making and creating!
We're looking forward to being more present and active with issues we feel are
important to us and our community with the
creation of campaigns and projects which fit in with our long held beliefs. So pretty
much we're taking Craft Guerrilla back to our craftivism roots! That was always
the intention though along the way we grew and expanded into all sorts or beautiful
and fun avenues... and that is still something we enjoy and want to offer too. I hope it's a jourtney
you'll want to take along with us...
And so all that is left to say is that even though we're pretty quiet at the moment
we are still here dreaming up ways of making Craft Guerrilla an important and viable
collective...we haven't forgotten about you!
Keep crafting, keep healthy, look after one another and hopefully together we can make the
world that much more brighter.
Lots of love from Debbie and the Craft Guerrilla army!

Along with the team at The New Road Hotel we decided that according to expert advice that we would rather not go ahead than put anyone at risk.
It's a weird time but we've been closely watching and taking advice from the government and have decided that although we think crafting is very needed activity at this moment in time that it wouldn't be right to continue with potentially unsafe events as the workshops are a group activity.
All ticket sales will be refunded see please look for our email in your inbox.
We're truly sorry for any inconvenience and we are sad that we can't see your lovely smiling faces experiencing the joy of craft but it's a weird time and we have to do our civic duty and #StayAtHome as much as we can!

We've postponed as many of the dates that we could and therefore are looking forward to seeing you all at some point in the future but in the meantime we will be posting a few projects on here that you can do at home while self isolating!
And we're also looking into hosting a few online group sessions just so we can still all meet up virtually so please keep your peepers peeled for dates and details!

So for now take care of yourselves, your loved ones and continue to stay safe and healthy!
Lots of love (at a safe distance of course!),
It's also come to our attention that this January is our 10th anniversary! Yes can you believe it that Craft Guerrilla has officially been going since 2008?!

In fairness a lot of time has been taken off recently due to personal reasons -mainly health and family!- so it has been a bit of a long exhausting road with many bumps and hoops which have been suitably jumped through but it's also been one where many new friendships and new partnerships have been forged plus we've been part of lots of amazing projects too!

By focusing again on the initial manifesto it's taken me back to the "workshops for the masses" idea and to the belief that craft is something powerful and should be available to all. Plus exploring craft as therapy was something I'd still like to work on.
You've probably heard the expression "Flow" and that's how we wanna roll!
It's a state similar to meditation which can usually be experienced when performing a repetitive action, like in knitting, crochet and embroidery for example and that promotes mindful reflection. And also because we are a bit of a raucous bunch we wanted to sink our teeth back into subversive crafting and getting involved with a few more guerrilla style activities.

Although we're currently focused on craft therapy through the creation of flow workshops to promote wellbeing we know that craft workshops are also a great way to start your very own making adventure by learning new skills so it's open to anyone and everyone not just to those who are looking for a wellness fix!
More and more I see how important the role of making has become, how it connects us to others and to our environment so yes... 2018 is going to be chockablock full of creativity and awesomeness!

Plus we're also looking into possibly of reintroducing our highly popular and successful Designer Maker Markets... we hope you can join us on our adventure! For now it's all in motion and we promise to tell you more as soon as we can...

So in brief 2018 sees Craft Guerrilla teaming up with an exciting new venture so keep those peepers peeled as we'll be announcing our workshop diary and more very soon!

Yup, it's been another year of great -and not so great!- ventures and lots of thinking and letting go of "old" things... mainly projects and ideas which are no longer working for us or making us happy but also the revaluation of what we want to do, where we go from here and our place in the craft world!

And so it's with an open heart that we wish everyone a very happy yule filled with love and joy plus a genuine wish that next year all your dreams come to fruition and that the universe answers those calls. We're positive that it's going to be an awesome year...
so look out for our new events coming in 2018 because we are back and raring to go!

Keep it crafty and remember: Makers gonna Make!!!

Lots of love.
It's been quite a while... yup, we've been away from our lovely blog and it's not because we don't love you or that we've been lounging around in a tropical island... no, no, no... that would be amazing though not this time -maybe when we win the lottery!- but suffice to say we've had a busy old summer and because of it we're pooped! So much so that while we were thinking of ways of finding some extra energy that we came up with this awesome recipe...

Oh yes crafting and creating is hard work and we need tons of energy especially now that we're entering Autumn.
As the nights draw in and the warm sunlight fades we need to find energy in other ways and one of my favourites is through food.

So here's what you need to make our Craft Guerrilla Vegan Super Snacks:

100g pecan nuts (or any nuts you fancy)

75g soft pitted dates

1 tbsp Agave Syrup (or maple syrup)

1tbsp Sugar free cocoa powder

1tbsp Chia seeds (you can replace with almond flour or sesame seeds or 50/50 mix of both)

2tbsp organic peanut butter

Desiccated coconut, cocoa powder or chopped hazelnuts to cover

This what you need to do to make them:
Blitz all ingredients in a food processor until you have a chunky paste. Don't over do it as you'll still want some larger nutty bits for extra texture.
Form into small golf sized bites giving them a gentle squeeze while rolling so they're nice and solid.
In a plate sprinkle some desiccated coconut (you can toast some for extra flavour) and roll the Super Snacks to cover them with lovely sweet coconut!
You can also melt some dark chocolate (the darker the better as you'll want very little or no sugar for this recipe) and dip them for an extra lush coating.
Pop into an air tight container and refrigerate, eat one whenever you need an extra boost of energy!
Makes about 10.

P.S. Don't be afraid to experiment with your ingredients! For example you can add matcha tea powder instead of chia seeds (but be careful, you'll need to add less matcha powder, maybe 1 tsp or it'll have a strong fishy flavour!) and replace the pecans with lovely pistachios and substitute the peanut butter with almond butter. It's all good just don't forget that the only "bad" stuff that we don't recommend adding is sugar... substitutes like dates, apricots and agave provide natural sweetness so go on, get making!

This weekend saw the grand opening with a two day market featuring over 60 artists who operate from the studios.
Nestled in an industrial complex on Argall avenue just between The Marshes and Leabridge Road Over ground Station this cute brick built set of units houses not only Turning Earth but a host of other small design businesses and including LightHus which some of you might recognise from the Saint James Street end of Walthamstow Market.
I must confess that with so many beautiful things on sale that I had my eyes on the end of sticks!
I found an array of amazing pieces from pretty and dainty cake like vases to wild and colourful spiky pots which wouldn't look out of place in Salvador Dali's home!
So here are a few favourites designers who's work I fell in love with on the day... all though there were so many more ceramic pieces I could have easily given a home to. Click on the links under the images to visit individual websites and on the photos for larger images...
The light and airy warehouse studio is not just beautiful but I can
imagine it must also be an inspiring place to work in.
Membership fees
are on a monthly basis and allow makers a weekly 15 hour working time,
plus a shelf, glaze room and use of kiln as well as expert lead technical staff.

Having studied ceramics and have had previously worked in a tile studio in London the draw to this place is immense!
Yes it's been a while since I've thrown anything onto a wheel and all though I did specialise in traditional Portuguese tile painting throwing was always something which had proven to be a skill I've always wanted to improve!
And to be honest after almost 26 years I can bet that my skills are going to need a lot of honing! BUT with the arrival of Turning Earth I'm hoping to change all that!
Having just recently moved into a house with a garden I found the prospect of using this book in my own little space extremely exciting! I can't wait to get my hands dirty come Spring time!
And also because I'm usually on a tight budget recycling and using found objects is something I also find really attractive and interesting.
I know I'll finally get the perfect garden with the help of this title by reproducing quite a few projects as well as put into practise some of the planting and growing advice.
We've inherited someone else's gardening choices and as much as I do love the Japanese style of our tiny garden I also feel that due to years of neglect that it could do with some attention and a good old re jig!
It's also super shady so any vegetable growing has been limited. Last year's tomato crop yielded 4 tiny little berries... though the quince tree is thriving and happy -we got 8 kilos of plump fruit in early Autumn- so it's never going to be a bountiful vegetable field!
Coming to the conclusion that it won't be like Tom and Barbara's small holding in The Good Life was tough to accept! My planting will have to work around its natural geographical placement so it will be more of an ornamental garden with a few choice veg... And that's OK!
I will however have lots of nifty tricks to make my space an insect friendly, chemical free paradise using what I've learned... from weeding the environmentally friendly way (OH yes it can be done!) to harvesting seeds!
I particularly love the outdoor chandelier and the pallet furniture but also the useful tips like how to keep your garden pest free with zero pesticides! There is so much to take away from this book so if you're looking to become the new Monty Don or just after a animal friendly, eco friendly garden then I'd totally recommend this new title.
Though I won't be creating the gardens of Babylon I have faith that my little patch of urban greenery will become my very own private garden of Eden! Minus the snakes... no, really, no snakes even though I love them but hedgehogs, birds and insects will be most welcome!
There’s no need to spend a fortune either, Holly and Leslie will show
you how to make the most of what you already have by using what you already have in your home, garden, craft room or
in your pantry to create show stopping creative decorations.
With this amazing book you'll learn how to create a variety of looks that feel luxurious and special with very little effort! OK, by
"very little effort" I don't mean just throwing a few green bits in a corner and
saying "That's it, job done, and doesn't that look great?" but as
in easy, stress free and not very expensive projects that look lush and give the impression that you've spent days setting up!

I personally love the Bright Mexican inspired theme and even though it doesn't necessarily come under the "holiday season" theme I'm taking my queue from these ladies and just making it work for me and my party! This year we're staying in London and we've decided to invite a few friends over for a fun and easy going Christmas party!
I've started working on my "Feliz Navidad" theme by going for accessories which are both bright and happy!
I'll be making the paper flowers, paper bunting (or Papel cortado/ papel picado), garlands and using rich coloured blousy flowers for a centrepiece plus lots of fairy lights, church candles, recycled brightly illustrated food tins, cactus and giant confetti to adorn the table. Adding a hint of rich golds and deep hues will make it even more special so I really can't wait to get started.
For example I love the white paper bunting which is still beautiful but not as bright and zingy so that'll calm down the whole scheme but the rest will be a colourful fiesta for the eyes!

That's the thing, you really don't have to stick rigidly to the theme or to the type of event it was initially created for, you can mix and match and either go all out or just use some elements which fit in with your lifestyle and your home as well as party type.
There is definitely room to explore and add your very own twist to it too but as a starting point this book offers a wealth of ideas and inspiration!
So with great advice on choosing themes, setting the scene, how
to host a stress free dinner party and even down to choosing your play list
to create an inviting ambiance I know that many of you will enjoy this book as much as I did.
I am hopeful that 2017 will become a year
of celebrations and good times (cue the high kicks!) and with these two creative women showing us how to set the perfect scene... well, it'll be a doddle! Whether you buy this book for yourself or as a gift for the ultimate party girl (or boy) this will definitely be one of those titles that will prove to be of great use and not just a coffee table book.

Hand made is not just for Christmas but we'd love it if more people did buy into the idea that X-mas gift giving is something that should be done off the peg, with thought, love, attention and care so Christmas can be the ideal time for showing just that!
So many people spend a fortune buying a shed load of gifts for their family and loved ones when in fact purchasing just one or two great, high quality, original hand crafted items will not just last a lifetime but will bring a wide smile to the receiver!

Here's out top 10 gifts we'd like to share with you...

So there you go... Supporting friends and loved ones through these modern times is a gift too!
We wish you a very happy and peaceful Christmas whatever you do and who ever you spend it with!

First things first, I have to confess... though I'm no expert dress maker as a teen I used to make a lot of my clothing!
Don't get too excited, my makes was pretty much sewn together with hope and out of desperation as it was just too hard finding alternative clothing in a small town so making my own was the next best thing! But it wasn't particularly done well, it served its purpose but mostly things ended up being held together by safety pins. Hey, that's a fashion statement too but... it also was to keep seams together!!!

In all fairness I have progressed but I don't really make that much of my clothing anymore but I have to the point of making a circle skirt from start to finish. Even though I have the basics there's still lots to learn. And I'm keen!

But the reality is that Matt puts my very basic sewing skills to shame -Gosh, do you remember how easily he managed to whip up his beautifully tailored leather
biker jacket and a sweet baby blue tartan kilt?! Seriously amazing!!!- so when I was given this book to review I was pretty happy to do so
as I thought it would be the type of book that I could dip into when
ever I needed to.

It's got lots of handy hints and tips like how to hem jeans and change
buttons on coats. It's a nice book and you won't be just up-cycling,
mending and up keeping what you already own but also making clothing
from scratch, all be it the projects are not super complicated but I'm
not against that at all as I do think simplicity is sometimes (if not
mostly!) the best way!
And also I don't want to be put off by super
elaborate sewing projects either... well not yet!
Making clothing is fun but it can also be daunting especially when following a pattern or doing more complex bits like adding an invisible zip or darts* to a skirt.

*Note: OK so if the word darts has you conjuring images of Bully the Bullseye Bull in your mind then I think forget about sewing and just get yourself down to the nearest pub! But if you have a slight notion that it's to do with tailoring then this book might just be what you need to help you get further into sewing and making your very own clothing.

I've actually got my eye on the red and white stripy top and I'm looking forward to adding it to my Spring to do sewing project list... ha and the skirt!

Matt's book is easy and straightforward with comprehensible step by step tutorials and even a guide to sewing machines and tools.
Not everyone is born with a natural ability to thread a machine or or with the knowledge of which foot to use for a specific task but it's something anyone can learn... and there's a whole section explaining just that and even a handy guide to tools and how to use them so you'll be sewing like a pro in no time!
So if you're after something which will take you to the next level of dressmaking then I think it's a great book.
It's not necessarily a book for the experienced sewer but perfect for those who are taking their first shaky steps into the wonderful world of dress making/tailoring with clear and concise sections including: Tool Kit to Cool Kit, Fabrics, Stitching, Make it your own, Make it from Scratch, Make it wearable, Make it live longer to a handy glossary and resources page in the back.

But what I do really like about this book is that there's a lot of altering projects like tightening trouser legs,
mending and maintaining clothing too, and even a handy laundry guide and
a repair section. It's 100% up my street as having an ecologically
sound wardrobe isn't always easy to have but with Matt's book you'll be a step closer!
Spooktacular treats like Flapjacks are easy and inexpensive to make using cupboard staples and a healthier alternative to Halloween candy! Though I do like candy -a lot!- I also love Flapjacks.... and they don't seem as naughty when you're consuming your own weight in them! Not that I'd advise anyone to eat too much sugar but if there's one day that you can go a little mad on the sweet stuff it's on Halloween so... you know, enjoy within reason!

So below is my basic Flapjack recipe which is super easy to knock up! It takes all of about 10 minutes and about 20/25 minutes to bake.

Note: You can omit the dried fruit and nuts if you wish but as it's Samhain I decided to treat myself to the max and added as much of the extras as I wanted. You can use the basic recipe and add your own twists like a caramel and chocolate topping or even add to the mix some coconut, banana chips and/ or chocolate chips!

Here's my Flapjack recipe:

150g butter

65g Light Brown soft sugar

3 generous tbsp of Golden Syrup

250g rolled oats (porridge oats)

The extras...

zest of one orange

hand full of dried cranberries (or substitute for which ever fruit you prefer like figs, dates, apricots or mixed peel)

80 grams of mixed nuts (walnuts, macadamia, pecan, almonds, Brazil nuts etc.)

1/2 tsp of cinnamon

Method:

Preheat the oven to 180C (160C fan) gas 4.
Grease and line a shallow 20cm square tin with grease proof / baking paper.
Put
the butter, sugar and Golden Syrup into a medium
pan and gently heat until melted. chop nuts and zest a large orange into the oat mix.
Remove the butter and sugar mixture from the hob and leave to slightly cool.
Stir in the oat mixture until incorporated.
Turn mix into the
tin, level and press the mixture evenly and firmly with the back of a
spoon.
Bake for 25 minutes, or until golden around the edges. Do not over bake or it'll become hard and quite dry.
Remove
from the oven and cool on a wire rack still in the tin for10 minutes then mark into 12 or 16 pieces
whilst still warm.
If you're adding a layer of chocolate topping remember to do so while the Flapjacks are still in the tin.
Cool completely before turning out onto a board and
cutting again with a sharp knife.
Well, subversive if you want it to be, we won't judge if it's not, and if you use our hints, tips and resources to create panels featuring kittens in baskets then that's fine too. We just want to get people making and getting into the healing and energizing craft flow!
Crafting is definitely not just about making but also about finding time and ways to switch off from the stresses of the modern world!

Finding the
perfect craft discipline for your skills is sometimes hard and even
harder when there's a perception of suitability mainly when it comes to
genders.
What Molla manages to do is offer up crochet that is gender free,
though obviously - and like I said before - it is primarily geared to men but if you're not a guy don't let that put you off... it has lots of projects that anyone can make so it is
in fact a very unisex book.

When we hosted our craft nights I noticed how most participants were female so getting guys involved has been a long time struggle and one I totally understand.
However we did get the occasional man joining in but hand on heart... I wish there had been more! We did try to have a selection of activities which suited everyone regardless and we do believe that
making is a beautiful thing which all genders, ages and backgrounds can benefit from!

Not only does craft making have health benefits it also provides a nice respite from the modern world plus I kinda think it's
pretty beautiful to see a guy being creative and using his hands to make
useful objects too.

Even though it's targeted at the male of the species I would still be happy to make any of the projects in this book as being super feminine, aka girlie girl, isn't my thing either!
It's really refreshing to see a book which is open to all. As you know there are already tons of books offering saccharine sweet projects, which if that's your type of thing great, but if you prefer things a bit less twee and pink then wrap your peepers around this amazingly beautiful book... Excuse the pun but... it'll have you hooked!!!

Molla's book is divided into sections and it even has instructions for beginners as well as a whittle your own crochet hook tutorial. The patterns are divided into categories: Home, Clothes, Travel and Equipment so there are lots of great projects for all sorts of abilities as well as functions.
With easy to follow patterns that any novice can get to grips with I'm sure that even the most anxious of crocheters will be able to finish at least one of the easier projects!
Some of our favourites are the quirkier projects like make your own death metal band banner or the speaker slip cover so all in all you can still craft and keep your Rock n roll kudos alive and kicking!
What I also particularly like is the generous end section which is about 20 pages long with instructions so all in all you can pretty much complete all the 30+ projects on your own. It covers a lot of the basics which for me was excellent as I'm not a crochet pro.
There's also a nice extra bit - Maintenance- which shows you how to stretch after long crafting sessions. As some of you might know crochet claw for example is a real thing and your body can stiffen up when crocheting.
Molla's Brother, Pasi, a yoga instructor shows us a few exercises to help us stretch and breath so we can keep on crafting!
The actual look of the book is beautifully rugged, outdoorsy and yes I'm gonna say it again... very Scandi!
Apart
from the awesome selection of projects and beautiful photos there are
lots of tattooed blokes with beards in chunky sweaters on skateboards
looking dashingly handsome. But you know what? I like it... in fact I
kinda have a crush on it!
And there are cute dogs too, look at that husky in a bow tie...what's not to love?!
So yes, I think it's pretty awesome and I'm sure many of you would love this book too and so will your man friends. Bearded or not, guys need some more craft in their lives so yes if you do one good deed this year get the man/men in your life crocheting!
Crochet is pretty mechanical and can be a feat of engineering so crocheting kinda suits the masculine brain... though hey, I'm no one to generalise but through experience I found that lots of men like the more technical crafts!
OK so it is a craft book that has made me swoon -"stop being so gushy!" you cry- though in my defence I can say that bringing men folk into the craft fold is something which we've fought for for a long time so it's really more admiration and respect that I feel for what Molla's achieved.
What Molla's managed to do is make craft accessible and that's amazing!

But it's also so much more than just a craft book... her projects are fun, useful and all though I'm not an expert crocheter this has nudged me into wanting to learn more.
Blimey I've even managed to understand what all the abbreviations mean and that was something that had put me off crochet originally... patterns scare me but now I feel that I can actually try a project without coming out in stress hives!
So if it gets someone excited and wanting to explore crochet -or any other craft discipline- then that's gotta be good... Right?!
Head & Hands is a space where people are invited to purchase hand made goods (hand picked by Amanda for their quality, charm, beauty and healing properties), experience a head massage and view the work of some amazing makers and artists.
From hand made jewellery, hand made apothecaries, textiles, blended teas, ceramics, illustrated tarot cards to beautifully made macramé wall hangings.
Though this is not solely a shop as the main philosophy behind it is to offer people services which promote and encourage mindful and meditative practices the pieces which are for sale are exceptional as well as beautiful.
I could easily spend a whole heap of cash in there!!!
We've also heard from Amanda that in future she'll also be organising workshops to help keep those hands busy and heads chilled!
It's been proven that busy hands make for a healthy mind so we're completely on board with this philosophy and we hope to see these workshops up and running soon!!!
This is why I love the concept of this business so much, the offering of holistic well being through creativity is something which resonates with me and I'm sure will with many others too.

To say that Craft saved my life would not be an exaggeration. You see, let me explain, during the mid 1990's I went through something quite difficult in my life, some sort of P.T.S.D. which left me with agoraphobia, anxiety and debilitating panic attacks.
It was tough and though I tried lots of things the one thing which helped me more then any pharmaceutical was crafting!
Not that I am by any means advocating that drugs don't work -they can be a life saver for many people with mental health issues so please don't stop if you are being treated!- but for me it happened to be a mixture of meditation, counselling and making that pulled me out of the abyss.
Though it was predominantly crafting that helped me through a dark time I encourage anyone facing similar issues to see their GP for help and advice. Everyone is different so please seek help from a health professional!

The basic idea of this book is that you work on one of twenty suggested
projects whilst employing mindfulness-based meditative techniques.

Projects and exercises are grouped according to a different outcome. There are projects for relaxation, focus, refreshment,
perseverance, and even for crocheting with others to celebrate friendship and the support of a community group!
I love the Friendship Quilt made up of tiny individual flowers (pictured below) and I think it's a fantastic symbol of just how important and lovely individual friends can be and how together their help and love becomes even more powerful!
Looking at this quilt knowing that your friends helped to make it must transpose a feeling of love which is pretty awesome especially at times when you're not feeling great so this will serve as a gentle but powerful reminder. I really love this and hope to make my own too!

Funnily enough this was what prompted me to start the craft nights back in 2008. Crafting with others in a group gave me back my confidence and pretty much helped me get rid of the agoraphobia. Though it's something which never entirely goes away when I feel the mega stress monster knocking at the door I turn to crafting! It's something I've been advocating for years so this book just confirms that Craft Does Work!!!

So why crochet in particular and not just craft?
Well the idea of bringing together mindful meditation
and crochet makes sense. Personally I love the repetitive and hypnotic
nature of movements in crocheting. It's something which I find calming
and centring. Plus working on one discipline can be better than dipping in and out of several crafts so allowing your mind to easily follow and flow withing one basic skill and movement.

And there’s been a lot of credible evidence on the benefits of mindfulness based therapies
for a variety of problems including depression and anxiety.
If you'd like to read more about this follow this link...

The overall consensus on the project variety is that it's good.
From
stress-balls to shawls as well as
basic mandalas and other simple projects like friendship bracelets which are great for absolute beginners!
I can confirm that the
patterns are clear and well laid-out so not scary at all and as a basic crocheter you'll have to take my word on that! I might not attempt the other more advanced projects just yet but I'm planning on having a look on line for a couple of refresh tutorials before I continue.
The book design is fresh and
friendly too so even if you're feeling a bit out of your comfort zone the book in itself will calm you right down...
actually it's a bright and friendly looking book so it also works on the visual part of the brain which can make you feel happy. And calm!
Well looking at pretty, colourful things always makes me happy!

And if you've never
crocheted before there's lots of help at the back where the author has
added the basics including how to hold the hook and yarn to find the
perfect tension to get you going. Plus I must reiterate that the benefit also comes from the actual physical making so don't get too hung up on how precise or accurate it is. It might be the perfect excuse to join a class or even get a few crocheting friends around for an evening!
get in a tangle if you think it's not your scene because you will reap the benefits no matter what!
Besides you'll make some lovely things too so... win win!
holistic benefits of crafting to the public psyche.
Her background as a physical therapist is perfect for understanding the effects of the small physical movements
involved in knitting/crochet.

So myself and my favourite co conspirator - Debbie Bliss - decided to work with
a fantastic local group who donate caravans, kit them out and send them
over to the French camps to house the most vulnerable.

Side by Side and Walthamstow Refugees Welcome Group
are a completely self funded, grass roots community group made up of
Walthamstow residents who've been moved to raise funds to purchase
caravans to refurbish, kit out and send over to Calais.
The Wilcumstowe Wagons are such a great idea as dry, purpose built shelters are not easy to come by in the camps!

Plus the response to the actual making process (knitting) at our Crafternoon was something
people said had helped them by forcing them to concentrate, have a quiet contemplative moment and reflect on the actual situation we as humanity are currently facing.
So what's better than working together to
build something of massive importance? It's not just about making
blankets but also about bringing people together and actually doing
something!

And you know us and how we feel about quiet, slow contemplation and
crafting so this prompted us to start up our knit nights again.
It's a
little bit looser as there isn't a set date but for the moment we are
meeting up weekly because we're on a deadline.
But as the camps
aren't going anywhere soon this is something which we will keep doing
until a) they are no longer needed or b) the camps are no longer in
existence!

But for now...
We're trying to get at least 3 blankets ready for the caravans as we wanted to add a homely touch to them!
People
have lost so much so we're hoping it will provide not just warmth,
comfort but also possibly serve as a future heirloom to mark a change in
people's lives.
Our love for the unusual, designer made and stylish is something we find is becoming more of a norm as home owners all over the world are swamped by Modern Retro Fever. And it's addictive!

Published by Jaqui Small this brand new title by Caroline Clifton Mogg is one I've enjoyed reviewing immensely! I too am one of those swamped by the big love for quirky vintage living!
Though it's not a new kind of love it's one which has been maturing and growing along the years. A bit like the general public's appetite for it!
I have quite a few pieces of everyday furniture which are just fit for purpose but... there are also a few key statement pieces I've been collecting throughout the years.
But finding the right comprehensive look can be hugely daunting but equally thrilling! Knowing how things fit together, well that's an art form...

Mixing the modern retro with objet trouvé is something that requires a little practise as well as an understanding of how each element works best singularly but ultimately as an entire look!
Having the eye and the ease to mix styles is nothing short of alchemy, though with this title at your side you too can create a magical and inspiring place filled with all kinds of gems!

But this is not just a book about admiring or valuing twentieth-century design. Far from being a catalogue this book is about how to make this wonderful style work in a contemporary home.
I like the way it's divided into sections according to styles under the Retro Styling banner, exploring different interpretations which will surely suit all types of tastes. Classic Mode, Rustic Reclamation, Structural Industrial, Colourful, Eclectic. Knowing where things go, and how things respond to each other in a
scheme has always been an integral part of successful interior design,
and it is even more important when it comes to creating an interior that
is a mixture of the expected and the unexpected.

And that's where Caroline Clifton Mogg's expertise and talent becomes clearly apparent.
This book showcases all the different elements, from chairs to mirrors, from lighting to
textiles and also Room by Room which looks at every part of the retro home providing an array of gorgeous and inspiring decorative ideas.

Modern
Retro shows how to combine, how to edit and how to put the unlikely and
the unusual together to make your home a modern retro masterpiece. And may I add that it won't be like living in a museum either... it's about building a livable home with imagination and heart!
